Why fuse boxes are a real issue, not just "old-fashioned"
Fuse boxes aren't automatically dangerous just because they're old — but they come with real limitations:
Lower capacity — most fuse panels top out around 60 amps, which struggles against modern homes running AC units, multiple large appliances, and electronics simultaneously
No safe way to add EV chargers or heat pumps — these need dedicated circuits at capacities most fuse panels simply can't support
Insurance complications — some insurers charge higher premiums or refuse coverage entirely for homes with fuse panels, treating them similarly to how they treat known hazard panels
Fuses get "penny-swapped" — a common, genuinely dangerous practice from decades past where an oversized fuse (or even a coin) gets used to stop a fuse from blowing, removing the safety protection entirely. If you've owned the home a while and don't know its full history, this is worth having checked.
What the conversion actually involves
Full replacement of the panel itself — not a partial swap; fuse-to-breaker means installing a completely new breaker panel

How this differs from a standard panel upgrade
If you're already on breakers but at 100A and want 200A, that's a more straightforward capacity upgrade. Converting from fuses is a bigger structural change — you're replacing the entire panel type, not just increasing capacity within the same system. Cost-wise, they land in a similar range, but a fuse conversion often also means updating some of the wiring the fuses were protecting, depending on the home's age.
