Holiday Lighting Electrical Safety: What to Check Before You Decorate

Before the lights go up this year, a few quick checks can be the difference between a bright display and a breaker-tripping headache — or worse.

Count your outlets before you count your strings

Most exterior outlets are on a single circuit, and holiday lights add up fast. Running too many strings off one outlet is one of the most common causes of tripped breakers (and overheated extension cords) every December.

GFCI protection isn't optional outdoors

Any outdoor outlet should already have GFCI protection by code — if yours doesn't trip-test when you press the button, or you're not sure it's GFCI at all, that's worth checking before you're running power near snow, ice, or wet grass.

What to actually look for

  • Frayed or cracked cords on light strings, especially ones stored in a garage or attic through summer heat

  • Extension cords running cord-to-cord instead of a single rated run to the outlet

  • Indoor-rated strings used outside — check the packaging, this one's more common than people think

  • An outlet that feels warm after lights have been running a while

If you're planning a bigger display this year

Larger displays — rooflines, multiple trees, inflatables — sometimes draw more than a single circuit can handle safely. If you're scaling up, it's worth a quick capacity check before buying more lights than your panel can support.

Want it done once, done right?

We can add dedicated, properly protected exterior outlets if your current setup isn't cutting it — a one-time fix instead of a yearly workaround.
