Whole-Home Surge Protection: Is It Worth It?
SPD|
Power surges are one of those risks most homeowners don't think about until something expensive gets damaged — here's what whole-home surge protection actually does, and whether it's worth adding.
What causes a power surge
Not just lightning — the most common surges actually come from things switching on and off within your own home's electrical system, or fluctuations from BC Hydro's grid itself. Large appliances cycling on, nearby construction, and grid switching events all create small surges more often than most people realize.
What a whole-home surge protector actually does
Installed directly at your panel, a whole-home surge protective device (SPD) intercepts voltage spikes before they reach your home's wiring and the devices plugged into it — protecting everything downstream at once, rather than relying on individual point-of-use surge strips at each outlet.
Why point-of-use surge strips aren't enough on their own
A power bar labeled "surge protector" only protects what's plugged directly into it, and many are rated for much smaller surges than a whole-home device. They're still worth using for sensitive electronics, but they're a second layer, not a replacement for panel-level protection.
What's actually at risk without it
HVAC systems and heat pumps
Major appliances (fridge, washer/dryer)
Home electronics and entertainment systems
Increasingly, smart home devices and integrated lighting systems — exactly the kind of system we install as Lutron specialists
Is it worth the cost?
A whole-home surge protector is a relatively small one-time cost compared to replacing even a single major appliance or a smart home control system after a surge event. For homes with significant investment in electronics, HVAC, or smart home integration, it's one of the more straightforward "cheap insurance" upgrades available.
Want your home protected?
We can add whole-home surge protection during a panel upgrade or as a standalone installation.
